PREVIOUS CLINICAL APPOINTMENTS

North West (Manchester deanery) high surgical orthopaedic training programme - 1 and 2 year posts at many local Manchester hospitals including Wigan & Wrightington NHS Trust, Royal Oldham Hospital, Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Blackburn Royal Infirmary, Manchester Children Teaching Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital, Stockport Stepping Hill Hospital and Imperial College SM London.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE - Orthopaedic Career Commentary

After qualifying in Barcelona in 1992, I moved to England where in the North-West I did my house jobs and Basic Surgical Training.

Following that, I spent a year as a Research Fellow at The Imperial College School of Medicine in Charing Cross Hospital and South Kensington biomechanical department under the supervision of Prof A Amis, Mr R K Strachan and Mr R Thomas. In this post I developed my interest in lower limb surgery and commenced research projects in collaborative work with biomechanical engineers, cellular biochemists, geneticists and rheumatologists, which I have continued during my training.

I returned to the North-West to undertake my SpR training in August 1999 and have gained considerable experience in both elective and trauma orthopaedics.

I have continued my interest in teaching, training and education, being directly involved in the teaching of final year medical students and I have been an organiser and faculty member of Orthoteers Clinical Examination and Short Cases Course for FRCS Orth and I am a faculty member of the AO Synthes Courses.

I am a Member of the Examining Panel of the Intercollegiate UK Board in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery.

I published and presented work both at national and international meetings and journals.

I am a Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer in Trauma with special interest in Knee, foot and ankle surgery since 200. I have recently been appointed Clinical Director in Trauma & Orthopaedics in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust/Liverpool University.

Trauma Surgery

I am working alongside my colleagues in a busy trauma unit; I am taking the lead in foot and ankle complex trauma cases.

Foot & Ankle Surgery

I set up “The Foot and Ankle Service” in my hospital with the whole range of surgery from open, arthoscopic procedures, lower limb reconstruction and total ankle replacement . I have established a direct referral service with our colleagues’ reumathologist, diabetologists, physiotherapists and podiatrist.

Knee Surgery

I am offering surgery for degenerative pathologies such us, knee arthroplasty, cartilage repair as well as arthroscopic surgery. I am very keen in patellofemoral disorders.

Teaching

I am educational/clinical supervisor for year 2,5, final years Liverpool medical students and foundation doctors. I am a faculty member of the AO Synthes Courses, and I'm directly involved in the teaching of final year medical students, MRCS students.

I am a regular examiner for the LOCAS examination for medical students and PETA process assessor for year 5 medical students (Liverpool University) and I've been an organiser and faculty member of Orthoteers Clinical Examination and Short Cases Course for FRCS Orth.

I am an examiner for the intercollegiate examination in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I am integral part of the Teaching Programme for the exam in the Mersey Deanery , which includes being a regular faculty member on the Clinical’s for the Exam, Friday afternoon teachings, being an assessor for exam suitability, organising Clinical and Viva teaching when needed at Whiston, running viva and clinical practice in small groups for those coming up to the exam at their request, and faculty for the FRCSOrth course that the Mersey Deanery runs.

Audit and Research

I have been the audit lead in my department for 6 years (2006- 2012) working together with my colleagues, nurses, physiotherapist and occupational therapist. I have left to the unit a structure well functioning system. I undertake regular audit as part of my continuous professional education and clinical governance. I have ongoing research projects implemented in my department.

Management

I am a clinical director. I have been directly involved helping the trust to successfully generate additional income streams into the trust, by developing new proposals and innovations for the delivery and provision of health service with management to improve the efficiency in theatre. I am presently interested in optimising several issues in our unit :

Kit and prosthesis cost,

Non elective contribution

Theatre utilisation

Medical staffing costs

Best practice

Coding

Getting the most out of consultant and middle grade job plans

Day case and Basket 25 performance

Medico Legal

I have been involved with medico-legal reports since becoming a Registrar in orthopaedics in 1998. At the moment I am a member of the expert witness panel in several medico-legal companies. I do an average of 100 reports a year. I have started to undertake negligent reports.
